Murano Glass Beads Information

The small island of Murano lies in a lagoon off the coast of Venice, Italy. It has been home to the world’s finest glassmakers since the Venetian Republic  in 1291 ordered glassmakers to move to the island of Murano fearing the glassmaking process would cause fire and destruction to the city of Venice's mostly wood buildings.

Murano glass is some of the most beautiful in the world. Murano glass beads are made entirely buy hand, blown over silver, gold or white gold foil giving the beads their world renowned beautiful lustrous shine. A piece of Murano jewellery is a treasure it is hand crafted and a living testament to an age old Italian tradition.

Most Murano beads are made using the wound lampworking or torch and mandrel technique, an approach which was invented by a Murano glass-master in the 1700's. The lampwork method is the most time consuming method of glass beadmaking because each bead is formed individually. They are made using a torch, to melt glass canes into a molten state which is then wrapped around a metal rod until the appropriate shape is achieved. Several layers of different colored glass as well as gold and silver leaf are used to produce the desired effect. After the bead is slowly cooled, it is removed from the rod which produces a hole for eventual stringing.

Our beautiful range of Murano glass jewellery is  hand made using genuine Murano glass, swarovski crystal and other natural gemstones such as Amethyst, Moss Agate, Carnelian and  Tigers eye.
